Long-Term Nutrition for Urinary Health
For pets prescribed a urinary diet
Your pet has been prescribed a special urinary diet to help prevent bladder stones or crystals. This food isn’t just a temporary fix; it’s part of your pet’s long-term treatment plan to keep their urinary system healthy.
Why the Diet Matters
- Urinary conditions happen when minerals and urine pH become unbalanced.
- Prescription urinary diets are scientifically designed to dissolve and prevent stones and crystals.
- Feeding anything outside of this diet, even a few treats, can change the urine chemistry and cause stones to form again. That’s why this food needs to be a lifelong diet, even after symptoms clear up.
Feeding Guidelines
- Feed only the prescribed food, no mixing with regular food or toppers.
- Always provide fresh water. Staying hydrated helps keep the urine diluted and flushes the bladder.
- If you switch formulas (dry to canned or vice versa), talk to your vet first; not all versions are interchangeable.
Treats That Are Safe
Many urinary diets offer matching treats made by the same brand. Ask us which ones are approved for your pet’s specific diet.
If you want to give other options:
- Use a few kibbles of their urinary food as treats.
- Avoid all other treats, table food, or flavored chews; even small amounts can undo the diet’s effect.
Follow-Up Care
- Your vet may recheck your pet’s urine every 6–12 months to monitor for stones or crystals.
- If your pet is due for dental chews, joint supplements, or other add-ons, ask us to make sure they’re safe with this diet.
- Report any changes in urination, accidents, or straining right away.
Lifelong Commitment = Lifelong Health
It can be tough to adjust at first, but staying consistent with the urinary diet will help:
- Prevent painful bladder issues
- Reduce the need for future surgery
- Keep your pet comfortable and healthy long-term
