What Is Heart Disease?
Heart disease occurs when the heart muscle or valves no longer function as efficiently as they should. This makes it harder for the heart to pump blood through the body, which can eventually lead to fluid buildup and fatigue.
There are several types of heart disease, but most dogs we diagnose are in the early or manageable stages. With proper care, many dogs live happy, active lives for years after diagnosis.
Common Signs to Watch For
You may notice some of the following symptoms:
- Coughing (especially at night or after activity)
 - Slower to get up or tiring more easily
 - Breathing faster than normal at rest
 - Decreased appetite or weight loss
 - Occasional fainting or collapse (in severe cases)

If any of these signs suddenly worsen, contact us immediately.
Treatment & Management
Our goal is to reduce strain on the heart and prevent fluid buildup. Treatment often includes:
1. Heart Medications
- These help the heart pump more efficiently and prevent fluid accumulation.
 - Common types include ACE inhibitors, diuretics, and positive inotropes (like Vetmedin).

2. Cardio Supplement
- A heart-support supplement that supports cardiac muscle strength and function.
 - Typically includes taurine, L-carnitine, and omega-3 fatty acids.

3. Prescription Diet
- We recommend switching to a cardiac-supportive diet, which is lower in sodium and rich in antioxidants and nutrients that protect the heart.
 - Royal Canin Cardiac or iVet Heart & Kidney are good examples, depending on your dog’s needs.

Ongoing Monitoring
Regular monitoring helps us catch any changes early and adjust treatment before symptoms progress. We recommend:
- Recheck exams and chest x-rays every 3–6 months (depending on stage).
 - Rechecking proBNP levels every 3–6 months to track heart strain.
 - Periodic blood pressure checks and kidney bloodwork, since some heart medications can affect these systems.

At Home
You play a big role in your dog’s care. Here’s what you can do at home:
- Track breathing rate at rest: Normal is under 30 breaths per minute.
 - Watch for coughing or heavy breathing.
 - Feed only the recommended food and treats.
 - Give all medications and supplements consistently.
 - Keep weight in a healthy range — even mild obesity adds stress to the heart.

Summary
- Heart disease can be managed successfully with medication, supplements, and diet.
 - Routine monitoring helps slow progression.
 - Early intervention = better long-term quality of life.
